    "Светлен Тончев е един от няколкото признати за най-добри специалисти по дифракционни решетки в света. Той е голямо име в науката с огромен принос в проектирането и създаването на уникални холографски решетки за различни приложения. Чрез предложените и разработени от него оригинални методи за холографски запис са получени нови резонансни структури с уникален дизайн. Високо ефективните периодични структури използват различни реонансни ефекти, много от които са наблюдавани за пръв път. Използват се за поляризационен контрол на лазерното лъчение и за формиране на фемтосекундни лазерни импулси. Блестящите му идеи са отразени в редица патенти в България, Франция и САЩ. Творческият му път започва и голяма част от него преминава в лабораторията по оптика и спектроскопия на Института по физика на твърдото тяло. Светлен Тончев бе не само голям учен-енциклопедист, но и един от най-добрите във всяко отношение колега - безкрайно отзивчив, внимателен слушател, ерудиран събесендик с неповторимо чувство за хумор. Неговата загуба отваря една огромна интелектуална и емоционална празнина"
